How do Ground Source Heat Pumps work?

A building is heated using ground source heat pumps (GSHP), which draw heat from the earth. They have a system of underground pipes known as a "ground loop" that holds a fluid—such as water or antifreeze—that absorbs heat from the earth. The heat is then released from the fluid and amplified by the heat pump unit to a temperature appropriate for heating as it travels to one inside the building. After cooling, the fluid goes back to the ground loop to continue the process.

In the winter, the GSHP extracts heat from the ground and uses it to heat your home. In the summer, this process is altered, and the system extracts heat from your home and sends it into the ground.

Advantages of using Ground Source Heat Pumps

Energy-efficient

GSHPs are one of the most efficient heating and cooling systems available, using 25-50% less energy than traditional HVAC systems.

Environmentally friendly

GSHPs don’t emit any greenhouse gases or other pollutants, making them a great choice for eco-conscious homeowners.

Long lifespan

With proper maintenance, GSHPs can last up to 25 years – much longer than most other HVAC systems.

Installation Options for Ground Source Heat Pumps

When establishing a GSHP, ground loops are the most frequently chosen option. In order to transfer the heat from the ground to the heat pump, collector pipes are laid in the ground at a depth of one metre. The sun constantly replenishes any energy that is taken out.
